What is Village Table?
We’re a small operation with a big mission: To promote artisan entrepreneurship and economic opportunities in places where wars or other adversities have contributed to exploitation of impoverished people. Big stuff for a little store.
We also support local and USA producers who consistently demonstrate quality and good citizenship in their businesses.
Here’s what we do: Village Table delivers beautiful, functional and responsibly sourced products for your home (with emphasis on kitchen and tablewares) from around the world to your door. Beginning in April 2017, we’ll locate our shop in the Newbo neighborhood, a destination spot in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
We’re selective in what we offer. Based on three year’s worth of research involving thousands of customers in the Midwest, we’ve chosen a select group of products that represent quality, beauty and functionality. We also continue to seek relationships with new sources who embrace an ideal that business can do good in the world and help — instead of exploit — labor and communities. Our business challenges the attitude that bigger stores with corporate offices located outside of a local community and cheap (wasteful) products are better for consumers.
A little bit about our background: In 2013, we opened our fair trade gift shop at Newbo City Market in Cedar Rapids — the second largest city in Iowa with a downtown that had been destroyed by a major flood in 2008. The public market, part of a re-development plan for an area damaged by the flood, was named after the Newbo neighborhood, which sits across the river from Czech Village (location of the National Czech & Slavic Museum & Library).
Rebirth of this historic district has shown that people can take small steps and turn adversity into opportunity. Renewal and restoration. It’s a theme that fits what we do. Village Table is proud to have been involved in the growth of the Newbo neighborhood. In 2015, we moved operations to Iowa City, Iowa — home of the University of Iowa — and developed an online store. Now, we’ll return to the neighborhood where we started under a new name that better represents the direction we want to go.
Village Table, our new shop, will open this spring in Cedar Rapids, and we’ll close out our lines of gifts and accessories in order to expand on and refine our kitchen and tableware offerings.
You’ll be able to shop the Village Table Collection on this website. And when you buy online from Village Table, you become part of a growing movement to restore ethics to trade and bring fair practices into retail shopping.
